The Definition of IPM is the ecological approach to pest management that effectively manages pests in a way that minimizes adverse effects on people and environment

Here are a few reasons IPM is mandatory:

  • Health-related issues – the pest problem may be an account inhabited by very young children, the elderly, or asthmatics/those with respiratory problems
  • Environmental sensitivities—pets, habitats to remain uncontaminated, etc.
  • Sensitive accounts—food accounts, animal accounts (zoos, aviaries, etc.), day cares, schools, hospitals, board and care residential homes
  • Legislative enforcement issues—school pesticide use laws and regulations, multi-dwelling units
  • Politically correct approaches—we must recognize that people tend to mistrust what we use; we must therefore make effort to gain their faith and support
  • Is not always a pest elimination—pest present may not be reduced to zero
  • Is not using same solution across the board, but most be tailored to each account
  • Is not cheap or free—the overall problem is being tackled, and the approach is a service and should be valued as a service
  • Is not an emergency service—chemical may be ideal if quick solution is called for

The itemized essence of integrated pest management:

  • Inspecting and monitoring—identify the pest present, determine the source of the problem which should include a history as well as successes and failures and the population level can be determined, i.e. how many locations are symptoms present to determine presence level
  • Education—teach the customer how to store things suitably with solutions like proper containers and other materials to lessen the chances of being attacked by the pest
  • Expectations—those of the said monitoring program
  • Physical, cultural, sanitation practices—removing unnecessary food sources, harborage of larvae and pests in things such as cardboard boxes, unnecessary storage areas, and in some cases ensure that the building is sealed up to exclude possible secondary problems such as rat or bird infestations
  • Mechanical or non-chemical controls—the use of glue boards to capture specimens for ID, and to set follow-up monitors. Remember that this use of the program will incur additional costs, and inspection and monitoring will necessitate additional labor; do not hesitate to request additional resources from customer; you may also use pheromone based
  • Chemical control—eliminate the pests still present in structure following source elimination

These concepts may be applied to all pests. Different inspections or education may be necessary as well as other items listed, but the aforementioned encompasses most pests.

Pest identification—an accurate id must be established during inspection

Monitoring—setting action levels of threshold levels to determine what kind of action level we are

  • Identify solutions—these should be based on inspection and determination of contributing causes and spell out action steps that must take place
  • Set action steps—to include id of who will do what and what will be done on the account, as simple as person to whom sightings are reported, who is responsible for cleanup and maintenance, whether homeowner or EPC.
  • Carry out the treatment—use the arsenal of both non-chemical and chemical resources, document findings
  • Following up—determine what follow procedures are necessary, communication to implement; continue to encourage and strengthen staff at facility, remember to maintain them as allies in IPM program
